HS Rankings Update: May 24

Tyler Russo      Cameron McElwaney
We’re coming to the end of the spring for a lot of teams around the country, with a handful of states already having wrapped up their championship tournaments while others are in the thick of it are just getting under way. Regardless, it means that the High School Top 50 has begun to move toward its final shape; there’s still plenty of shakeups to come, but it becomes clearer. With this, it’s important to note the factors that go into where these teams rank: it will not be made up of 50 state champions as we recognize the totality of seasons many teams have had and there may end up teams ranked higher than another even though they fell short. This Top 50 is what we believe to be: 50% the best teams in the country, 50% results based. There’s no exact science or formula to this, but we’ve gotten a good grasp on comparing these teams now.

The biggest change comes at the top as Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) moves up to 1 ahead of playing for a state title in Florida’s 7A classification tonight, where they could complete a perfect spring. Barbe (La.) moves up to 2 as their storybook finish in the state title game wrapped them up at 39-1, one of the best seasons in Louisiana history after they did similar a couple years ago. IMG Academy (Fla.) sits at 3 after a 25-0 year (where they can’t play a postseason), Bishop Gorman (Nev.) sits at 4 after winning a state title and capping off a really impressive campaign, and Tampa Jesuit (Fla.) sits at 5 as they play for a 5A state title this morning as this is being written.

There’s a ton of movement throughout the rankings, given the time between the last update and this one, with teams fighting for a state title, which also includes plenty of new faces as 9 new teams join the rankings (and there will be plenty more before the final one): Magnolia Heights (Miss.), Loganville (Ga.), Bay City Western (Mich.), Vestavia Hills (Ala.), Lowndes (Ga.), Bixby (Okla.), Harlem (Ga.), Eaton (Colo.) and Wesleyan Christian (N.C.). Stay tuned for more.
