College Top 25: March 4

Another crazy week of college baseball is in the books, and we keep getting reminded that we truly are in the golden age for our sport. We are witnessing amazing individual performances like Georgia Tech’s Drew Burress hitting four home runs in a single game and Winthrop right-hander Riley Huge striking out 20 batters in his start against Maine. From a team standpoint, there still seems to be quite a chasm between the Top-5 in the nation and the rest of the country. However, as we loaf our way towards the conference schedule, there will be much clarity to what the landscape holds for us the rest of the season.

It may sound redundant but the Top-5, once again, remains unchanged as they continue to collect wins at an accelerated rate. No. 1 Wake Forest (10-1) has played a moderately challenging schedule, but the Deacons open ACC play with a massive in-state series at home against the outstanding No. 11 Duke Blue Devils (10-1). The Arkansas Razorbacks (9-2) stick at No. 2 after their perfect week as they dominate on the mound. No. 3 LSU (11-1) is pitching at a high level and made a resounding statement by sweeping through the Astros Foundation College Classic. The No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies (11-0) show no signs of slowing down and have their biggest test of the year on Tuesday as they head to Austin to take on No. 14 Texas (7-4). Meanwhile, TCU (12-0) rounds out the Top-5 and they lead the nation in wins, not having dropped a contest thus far.

From a movement standpoint, the No. 7 Tennessee Vols (11-1) make their debut in the Top-10 and have scored double-digit runs in five of their last six games. Coming off a big five-win week, No. 9 Vanderbilt (10-3) returns to the Top-10 after one week. Texas and No. 18 South Carolina (8-3) both played outstanding schedules but took a little dive with their losing records on the week. There are three completely new programs in the Top-25 this week starting with UC Irvine (9-0) who made a statement as they swept through the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic and debut at No. 23. Texas Tech (9-2) is averaging 19 runs per game over the last two weeks and jump into the poll at No. 24. Rounding out the Top-25 this week, the Kentucky Wildcats (10-1) have quietly put together another outstanding start to their season.
