In the 2024 15U BCS National Championship match, CBU 2027 Scout Team Olasin dominated in the 10-2, run-rule victory over Hit Factory Pro 2027 - sealing an undefeated tournament.

CBU came out swinging the first chance they got - racking up 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning alone. Second baseman Moises Gudino lined a double to left field to knock in 2 of the 5 total runs he contributed throughout the game. Gudino also stole 2 bases, slid home on a wild pitch and stole home to flex some intuitive and aggressive base running.

Right after CBU took a commanding lead in the bottom of the first, a familiar sound to Floridians came blaring through the stadium at JetBlue Park - the lightning alarm. This led to a delay that lasted over an hour. Sitting in the dugouts and dodging the rain, the CBU players played music to keep themselves energized and focused.

When things finally resumed, the CBU defense continued to display their efficiency and talent - starting with the men on the mound. Left-hander Leo Reina started on the bump and put in 2 shut-out innings of work, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk and dealing 4 strikeouts. Through 38 pitches, Reina showed off his low-80s fastball and mid-60s curveball - his fastest pitch coming in at 82 mph.

For the next 3 innings of play, right-hander Lucas Shelly took the hill for CBU. Working in the low-70s with his fastball, and high-60s with his curveball, Shelly allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, no earned runs, 2 walks and struck out 1.

Though Hit Factory Pro 2027 finally put up 2 runs in the top of the fifth inning, it was not enough to stop the run-rule victory and the undefeated streak for CBU.

Reflecting on the long week, Coach Mike Olasin explained the factors that contributed to the team.

"They really came out and swung the bats really well,” Olasin said. "[They] never gave up and just tried to put games away when they were supposed to...They have each other’s backs. They love each other. They run through walls for each other. And obviously, if you have kids like that, then the teams are going to do well.”

Tournament MVPitcher went to Brant Bivens, the right-hander from Trenton, Florida who threw a total of 10 innings, allowing only 2 earned runs, 3 walks and dealing 9 strikeouts. He said he felt some stress with each passing game to stay undefeated.

"There was definitely some pressure having a target on our back,” Bivens said. "Everybody’s wanting to beat us, but we just kept calm and kept doing what we could do. And luckily, it turned out how it did.”

MVP went to Sammy Echeverry, CBU’s catcher, who had a great week behind the plate and in the box, contributing 8 total RBIs over the week.

'I’ve been tired all week," Echeverry said. "But it’s just a fight. When I fought through it, all that pain, it was all worth it…My parents motivated me a lot throughout this whole weekend. They weren’t here, but they were always watching me, always supporting me."

Though many of CBU’s victories throughout the week came in commanding fashion, with scores like 16-4, 17-1 and 21-1, Olasin said this team still has things they need to improve before their next tournament.

"We go to WWBA next week. So hopefully we continue to keep swinging the bats like we’re doing, keep pitching like we’re doing, clean up some defensive stuff. But besides that, it’s just great to finally come to a big event and truly play well all week. To get this national championship is really awesome for these kids.”

The 2024 WWBA 15U National Championship will be in Atlanta starting July 15.
