A long, humid week came to an end on Thursday morning as the South Charlotte Panthers battled fiercely with back-to-back innings and clinched a thrilling undefeated victory in the 2024 16U BCS National Championship, triumphing over CBU 2026 Scout Team.

From the start, CBU and the Panthers both showed determination as they came out swinging hard and were met by stingy opposing defense. However, South Charlotte took advantage of a few defensive miscues from CBU as right fielder Wyatt Lytle scored on an error, resulting in the first run of the game.

Shortstop Trip Ostergard lined a double to right field, knocking in 2 of the 4 runs he contributed for the Panthers throughout the game. Ostergard also contributed defensively, backing up pitcher Maddox Moore and making all the plays with a strong finishing throw to first baseman Health Klingensmith on multiple plays.

“When we scored that final run, we took the energy and ran with it,” says  Ostergard,  “I saw those guys in scoring position, they got to get in home, we had to win this game, we didn’t come this far to come this far.”

From then on, it was a tense defensive neck-and-neck battle as CBU plated 3 runs to tie up the game. The Panthers' defensive unit played with cohesion and confidence, turning potential hits into outs and ensuring that every scoring opportunity for CBU 2027 was swiftly extinguished.

On the mound, pitcher Maverick Walters led the team working consistently in the 79-84 mph range in 2.1 innings.

Relief pitcher Maddox Moore attacked the zone in the third inning and pitched in the 78-80 range with his heater. Coach Scott Clemons describes this moment as the turning point of the game.

“When Maddox Moore came to the mound, he shut them down for the rest of the game. He throws for us, and when he came to the mound it looked like they struggled a little bit,” says Clemons, “He was (pitching) with a different angle of the baseball coming in, kept them off the fastball and count when it was his advantage.”

The outfield was impenetrable. Center fielder and MVP Gunner Alm (North Carolina State commit) covered immense ground, making spectacular catches that drew gasps from the crowd. Right fielder Wyatt Lytle added to the defensive showcase with a diving catch that robbed an extra-base hit, while left fielder Maverick Walters demonstrated his cannon arm by nailing a runner at 2nd base with a pinpoint throw.

Though CBU gained the first run to break the tie, it wasn’t enough as the Panther’s continued to swing it, picking up a single, again, off the bat of Ostergard that brought the final 2 runs home, sending the victory to South Charlotte.

“We’ve played a lot of great teams, but we need to remember the end goal. We want to keep getting better as players and better as humans. The national championship is great but we want to make sure we are building young men and we are continuing to do that as an organization” says Clemons.
