After finishing out another win with his SWFL Rockies team at the WWBA Sophomore World Championship tournament, 16-year-old shortstop Braylon Sheffield took solace under the shade of a tree in Terry Park.

As his teammates poured out of the dugout, gathered their equipment and hugged their parents, Sheffield reflected on his relationship with his them and what had contributed to their success so far in the WWBA Sophomore World Championship.

“We’re all close, most of us,” Sheffield said. “There’s like 10 of us who have all grown up together. Most of us go to the same high school, so we have close relationships.”

Competing in Fort Myers, Florida, the Rockies are playing in their backyard as Sheffield and many of his teammates were born in the area and attend the nearby Bishop Verot Catholic High School.

After playing three games so far in the tournament, the Rockies had only given up two runs. They had won their second game 16-0.

In this calendar year, Sheffield’s batting average currently sits at .391 and has 31 runners batted in through 39 games played.

Contributing to his team’s success, Sheffield explained that the hard work has paid off when it comes to the time he’s put into training five-to-six days a week.

“I have four days at school and then me and my dad go and work on the weekends inside the cages.”

Sheffield’s dad has been the catalyst to Braylon’s baseball career - from when Braylon was three years old, all the way to present day as he joins the Rockies team in the dugout as a coach.

“He yells at me a little bit but it’s for a reason. It keeps me in line. It’s encouraging. My dad played baseball throughout high school and everything, so I had no choice,” Sheffield joked. “I remember hitting whiffle balls in the living room.”

In addition to looking up to his dad, Sheffield watches Barry Bonds and Mike Trout highlights in his spare time, sharing that he wants to emulate Bonds’s swing and hitting ability and Trout’s base running.

When he’s not training, playing or watching Bonds and Trout highlights, Sheffield’s hobbies include fishing, hunting — and one other common activity for kids Braylon’s age:

“I’m pretty good at Fortnite. Fortnite with the boys after a big win — we’re gonna go home right now and we might be on 'til midnight,” Sheffield smiled and looked around at his teammates.
