Andrew Salas Inks Deal with Marlins

It's almost become a yearly tradition at this point, as another January 15 approaches and the International Free Agent signing period opens up, another PG Select Festival alum will be signing a pro contract. And for as comfortable as it's becoming to see a Festivaler towards the top of the rankings, it's become just as customary for the Salas family as Andrew Salas is set to join his older brothers Jose (now Twins) and Ethan (Padres) in the pro ranks.

The second Salas to suit up in a Select Festival, Andrew looks to follow in his brother's footsteps as both have already begun to climb the ranks within their respective orgs. Similarly to older brother Jose, Andrew is a switch-hitting middle infield who draws rave reviews for his hit tool as he does his defense, something that echos the early reports from the middle Salas, Ethan, though he's arguably the top defensive catching prospect in all of baseball. At the time of the 14u National Showcase in 2022, Salas showed a more refined swing from the left side, though given the training at the family's complex where he sees former and current pro arms almost non-stop, the consensus is he'll have no problem acclimating to org ball from either side of the plate.

Here's the full report on Salas from that National Showcase:

Andrew Salas is a 2026 SS with a 6-1 140 lb. frame from Caracas, DF who attends Home School. Long athletic frame with great projection. Ran a 7.36 second 60-yard dash. Primary shortstop, very clean athletic and polished mover on the dirt, excellent balance and body control with extra soft hands and a clean funnel, transfers very well and already showing easy arm strength up to 85 across. Switch-hitter with good feel for both sides. A little more to like on the left side at present, moves in well with quick hands and good looseness, short to the ball and found the barrel a bunch with lift to the path. A little less bat speed on the right, under control with comfort getting out front and spraying liners. Very comfortable all-around in game action. Named to 2022 14u Perfect Game Select Festival.

My internal notes on the left-handed swing from Salas were as follows: "simple shift into contact, shorter to the ball, contact oriented approach, quickness to hands, some lift to it". It's not all to dissimilar from what you'll find in a lot of the top guys at an early age as he showed a feel for his movement patterns in the box and with that, could manipulate the barrel through the zone well. That quickness in his hands is always a good early indicator of things to come and given the fact he was listed a just 6-foot-1, 140-pounds, it wasn't by any means a stretch of the imagination to envision some strength coming once he hit his physical ceiling.

Now listed 6-foot-2, 185-pounds by MLB Pipeline, here's a snippet of what they had to say on the youngest Salas offensively: "Equipped with simple swing mechanics that feature very few moving parts, he often eschews power in favor of being a high-OBP, bat-to-ball hitter from both sides of the dish."

For as good as the bat may be, the defense could end up being the real eye opening tools for the young Venezuelan and it's been at the forefront of his skillset for some time now. Again, the internal notes from the showcase were glowing "soft hands, really clean xfers, super soft hands, gets to good positions with good angles, really good body control" which when paired with his 85 mph arm across the diamond (good for a top 5 mark in the event), all the makings for a premier international sign were pretty evident at an early age.

All the adjectives used at his 14u age hold true to present day, albeit a bit quicker and stronger, and he checks in as the No. 5 prospect on MLB Pipeline's Top International Ranking for the 2025 class. He's long been linked to the Miami Marlins, for more than a year now, and coincidentally enough, the Fish first signed the eldest Salas before they traded him and Pablo Lopez out to Minnesota for Luis Arraez in 2023.

The Marlins top prospect list is littered with former Perfect Game All-Americans and Select Festival alum, most recently adding PJ Morlando with their first round pick a year after grabbing both Noble Myer and Thomas White.

As for Select Festival alum signing via the international route, the tally continues to grow with each yearly period and Salas is just the latest in a long throng of talent. Coming on the heels of Jose Perdomo receiving a $5 million bonus last January from the Atlanta Braves, the youngest Salas joins his older brother Ethan Salas (Padres), Luis Ayden Almeyda (Orioles), and Angel Cepeda (Cubs), as well as Perdomo, as recent top signs in the international pool.
