Team Sheet: Ole Miss

Troy Sutherland
What Happened: The Rebels ultimately fell to the Razorbacks after a Friday double header split. Game 1 Friday was spun by staff workhorse Jack Dougherty. He went 4.1 before Head Coach Mike Bianco came out with the hook. He struggled to miss barrels after a two-run shot to Caleb Cali got things going for the Hogs. The offensive couldn’t get things going against talented left hander Hunter Holland and the Razorbacks were able to preserve their 9-0 as they handed the ball over to the 'pen. Game 2 was a much different story for the Rebels against another hard throwing left hander in Hagen Smith. Toeing the rubber for the Ole Miss squad was Xavier Rivas who was able to the Hogs to only 2 runs before turning it over to the pen with a 5-run lead. The offensive charge was led by Ethan Groff, Kemp Alderman, and Ethan Lege who combined for 7 of the Rebels 8 hits. Lege headlined the bunch with 4 runs batted in. After the split on Friday there was mounting pressure for the Rebs to win the rubber match given their disappointing season down the stretch. Saturday starter JT Quinn took the hill and kept the Rebs in it, leaving the game after 5 with a knotted game at 3-3. The Bullpen surrendered 3 over the final 4 innings and the Rebels' offense was unable to keep the pace despite a late push in the ninth.

Carrying Tool: Power Hitting plus Jacob Gonzalez. Any order with Kemp Alderman in the middle of it is going to have some juiced power numbers and Alderman left the yard to deep left with a velocity of the bat of 114 mph Friday night. The pair of Ethans (Lege and Groff) left the yard in the set, as well as a line drive shot by collegiate star Jacob Gonzalez. Calvin Harris turned his series around Saturday with a pair of hits, but he has ample strength to make a difference in the gaps with a handful of home runs. Corner infielders Anthony Calarco and Will Furniss also pose some threat for power. Jacob Gonzalez rarely steps foot on a field where he’s not the best player on it.

Area Of Concern: The pitching staff. They took a heavy blow with the loss of frontline starter Hunter Elliot for a portion of the season. Jack Dougherty and JT Quinn’s stuff stand out but the numbers attached to either guy aren’t necessarily eye popping. Grayson Saunier and Sam Tookoian are another pair of promising freshmen in addition to Quinn. They all logged meaningful innings for the Rebels and should be vital in the return to glory in 2024. Xavier Rivas pitched well in the game 2 victory against the Hogs.

Best Player on the Field: Jacob Gonzalez The well-coordinated middle infielder was penciled in at the top of the Rebel order for all three games as you would expect and as I watched more at-bats live, it really stood out how great Gonzalez’ plate discipline was. Multiple times he worked 6-plus pitch counts before taking a base on balls. The left-handed swing is pure but from a unique stance. There’s plenty of power to go along with the polished hit tool, Sunday leaving the yard in hurry deep to right field. Before that he got a pair of balls on the screws but had nothing to show for it. He is almost certainly a top 10 selection in the upcoming draft and may be the safest pick any team could make. The translatable tools, such as his defensive, hit, and plate discipline, should make him a candidate to really have a quick run through the lower levels. He profiles as a long-term leadoff or 2-hole hitter with 20/20 potential.
