2005 National Showcase
Devin Shepherd is a 2006 OF from Oxnard HS in Oxnard, CA, with a 6'4", 220 lb. frame. If anything, he looks bigger and stronger than his listed weight; this kid's a man. Shepherd has really improved his running technique over the last year and has added plus speed to his other tools. He ran the 60 in 6.74 and was 4.41 down to first from the right side despite a power swing. Shepherd's arm strength is top notch. He throws 89 mph from the outfield with very good on-line carry and throws 88 off the mound, although he isn't really even a secondary pitcher. His looseness at his size is noteworthy. At the plate, Shepherd has obvious plus raw power and bat speed but is a pretty good natural hitter as well who shows the ability to stay back on balls and go the opposite way when it's called for. He hits out of a tall stance and gets out to his front side quickly. Shepherd's approach is similar to some other taller power hitters such as Dave Winfield and Joe Carter. The ball explodes off his bat like few other hitters in the country. Shepherd is a good student who has committed to Oklahoma for college but will get high level professional interest.
