2006 National Showcase
Patrick Johnson is a 2007 right hand pitcher from St. Stephen's HS, residing in Conover, NC. Johnson is a "small" righty with an average build on his 5'10" 170 lb. frame. One positive physical attribute he does have are long arms, sort of overcoming his lack of significant height. Johnson also plays some middle infield and hits from the right side. His best postion is on the mound, where he ranked #64 among PG National Top 85 pitchers and when we saw him later in the summer in the WWBA 17U tournament, he was better than that. He is a very good athlete on the mound, with a nice delivery. Johnson has a long arm action and an arc that with his arm speed provides a lot of life on his pitches. He makes a clean circle on the backside. His is a very good arm action, best described as long, easy, and quick. Most outstanding is that Johnson is very polished on the mound, working efficiently and aggressively. There is a presence about him that puts hitters on their heels. Johnson has a quality three pitch mix and command of all of them. His delivery is free and easy with good rhythm, allowing him to be aggressive with the ball. Johnson has good body balance that allows his hand to command the ball at release. His fastball is 87-90 with good arm side ride and he showed the ability work vertically with the fastball, which can be quite lively at the plate. Johnson also has a snappy and tight 72-74 two-plane curveball with quick and late change of direction. He throws his change-up with plus feel and arm action. Johnson really is only lacking size and the way he goes about his business and with his stuff, that lack of size is not a BIG issue, pardon the pun. He is a good athlete and posted a 6.76 laser timed 60. A top tier D1 prospect that can be expected to come to school.
