Salas stood out in Lincoln with one of the best curveballs at the event. It didn’t have super outstanding velocity at 72 mph but it did have outstanding spin and a sharp, big, hard bite, making it a real knee buckler and a definite potential plus big league pitch. Salas’ fastball wasn’t pedestrian either, regularly sitting between 87-89 mph with some nice boring life to it. With batters sitting on his curveball out of self protection, Salas was able to get his fastball in on their fists. He showed a 74 mph change up but that pitch will need further development. Salas will be victimized by scout’s feelings about 6-0 right handers, although he does have a strong, compact body with the kind of compact, efficient arm action that indicates durability. He can pitch at any college in America right away. Steve is a good student.
