2013 National Underclass Session 1
Boyd Vander Kooi is a 2017 SS/RHP/3B with a 6-3 180 lb. frame from Mesa, AZ who attends Skyline HS. Tall, long lean athletic build, projectable body. Primary shortstop at present but has high upside on the mound and may have a future there. Pitches from a three quarter arm slot with a fast paced delivery with good downhill leverage. Fastball sinks hard with run to the arm side. Whippy arm action with good projection, up to 83 already, showed ability to hit spots on both sides of the plate with fastball, hard spin on 11-5 curveball with good projection, flashed solid changeup and threw all three pitches for strikes. Aggressive hitting approach with good strength to swing for age, chance to develop further. Pull hitter, developing bat speed, drives the middle well, some ability to use opposite field at times. Hands work well defensively, arm works, solid footwork. Very good student, named to the National Underclass Session 1 top prospect team.
