Eli Ankeney is a 2019 LHP/OF with a 6-0 190 lb. frame from Phoenix, AZ who attends Desert Vista. Large frame with a strong, athletic build. Frame projects to support additional size and strength. Primary left handed pitcher with a smooth paced, side step delivery. Stays tall and balanced on back side at gather and works to the plate with drop and drive actions. Lands in line with the plate and carries momentum through finish. Clean arm circle and take back and released from a high three-quarters arm slot. Fastball generated some downhill angle through the zone with running action to arm side, topped at 84 miles per hour. Slows arm speed slightly with a curveball offering that had 1/7 shape with tight spin and late depth. Also flashed a changeup offering that showed some sinking action to the bottom of the zone in the low 70's. Consistently changed speed and worked to each quadrant of the strike zone. Also worked out defensively from the outfield utilizing smooth, clean footwork while closing to the baseball. Fluid glove actions while funneling the baseball out front and worked through exchange well. Throws generated accurate, on line carry to the bag topping at 83 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, even stance and simple front side trigger. Created slightly top half coil at load and generated solid linear shift into contact. Direct path to contact with a slightly lifted barrel plane through extension. Tends to hit off a taller front but flashed good bat speed with strength at contact when squared. Primarily worked between the gaps the flashed the ability to turn barrel and worked to pull side as well. Very good student. Named to the 2017 West Academic Showcase Top Prospect List.
