James Toney is a 2018 1B/LHP with a 6-0 230 lb. frame from Forestville, MD who attends Charles Herbert Flowers HS. Large frame with broad shoulder and present strength. Primary first baseman with clean, athletic footwork while moving to and centering the baseball. Funnels the baseball cleanly and work through exchange efficiently. Easy arm action at release generating accurate carry across the infield at 76 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, even stance and small leg lift trigger. Stays on back side and works to contact with rotational lower half actions. Loose, extended path to contact with a line drive barrel plane through extension. Looked to throw barrel head out front and generated hard contact to the pull side gap. Created occasional carry off the barrel when on time and squared. Also pitched working exclusively from the stretch. Stays balanced on back side at gather. High hand break at take back and released form a high three-quarters slot. Fastball produced some cutting action to glove side in the mid 70's, topped at 75 miles per hour. Looked to consistently fill the strike zone and challenge hitter while on the mound. Good student.
