2020 California Workout Camp (Saturday)
David Loera is a 2021 C/RHP, 1B with a 6-0 185 lb. frame from Moreno Valley, CA who attends Citrus Hill HS. David is a physically mature, rock solid athlete, who has elite ability and an obvious passion for the game. In addition to his noteworthy ability on the diamond, David is also an exemplary student. He ran a 7.56 60 yard dash. A primary catcher, David stands out with his advanced approach and elite skill level. He shows an easy set up at the ready. He appears comfortable and confident and presents a low pre-pitch profile. His hands are smooth and consistent and his actions to receive are outstanding. He gains ground well and his 72 mph throwing velocity and 2.12 pop time are both commendable. His throws are routinely on the base. David is a polished HS catcher who projects highly to the next level. Big upside with the gear on. He also took a turn at first base. His timing and positioning there are solid. His feet work and his glove plays well. His plus, 80 mph arm strength is a bonus. His throws show solid carry and are consistently accurate. David also took a trip out to the mound. Although his future lies behind the plate, he certainly shows solid ability in front of it. He uses clean and simple mechanics. He has a longer takeaway and a whippy, extended finish. He does show some deception as he hides the ball behind his frame well as he works down the slope. He pitches off his well commanded 78-80 mph fastball that he keeps on the edges and in the lower half. His lone secondary pitch is a 66 mph slider that has classic 11/5 shape. His SL shows tighter spin and some depth late. David is truly impressive with a bat in his hands. He is a big swinger with a power approach. He starts with a narrow base, takes a bigger stride and triggers his bat with purpose. For a swing that is borderline violent, he has a very consistent feel for the barrel. He doesn't get cheated. He flashed big raw power that projects. He is going to punish some baseballs for a long time. David has multiple skills on the field. He could probably play just about anywhere on the diamond and be successful. His ability behind the plate and with the bat scream "college level catcher". David possesses the plus skill set and the right, positive disposition to play for a long time. A very talented player at a very important position who has the ability to impact the baseball with the bat.....David is all that and more. Big upside and big future.
