Jacob Stallings is a 2008 C/P with a 6'4'', 175 lb. frame from Brentwood, TN who attends Brentwood Academy. He has a tall and lanky build with loose athletic actions. Stallings is an outstanding defensive catcher. He's loose and agile behind the plate, even at his size and length, and does a very good job shifting and blocking. Stallings' hands can be a bit hard receiving the ball out in front but they are quick and flexible blocking and reaching. Where Stallings really stands out is his arm strength. He has plus/plus arm strength at 84 mph and had a best pop time of 1.80 with almost all of his game and warm up throws under 2.00. Stallings offense is not as advanced as his defense and his length and lack of relative strength are a factor. He hits from a spread crouched stance with a big load in back and high back elbow. There's lots going on to get his swing going and that doesn't work well with a long leveraged athlete. Stallings did hit better in games than in BP when he shortened up a bit but he does have balance and timing issues to work through. He should have the athletic ability to make adjustments. Stallings also took to the mound and threw 90 mph with raw pitching mechanics. Stallings' father is the head basketball coach at Vanderbilt and you can see the athletic ability and sports background in the way Stallings plays. He is also a good student.
