2006 California Uncommitted Showcase
Matt Mitchell is a 2007 RHP/IF/OF with a 6'3'', 205 lb. frame from Barstow CA, who attends Barstow HS. Selected as the Top Prospect in this event. Mitchell is one of the nation's top unsigned '07 grads and enters the spring high on the recruiting lists of many top college programs. After a great showing in Jupiter and a strong showing in this showcase, his outings will now be a regular stop for the Southern CA MLB scouts. Mitchell has a power pitcher's body, with strong legs and a broad upper body. His arm works cleanly from an over the top slot. He is clean on the backside and has good arm speed. The ball comes out of his hand easily. Mitchell has a simple delivery, with not much that can go wrong, mechanically speaking. There is good life on his fastball that topped at 90 in this event (91 in Jupiter) and sat in the upper 80s. The longer he was out there, the more crisp his stuff got. Mitchell's fastball has good life and at times can be heavy. There is more velocity to come for him, 3-4 mph can be reasonably expected by the end of this coming summer, if not earlier. He spins the curveball (12/6ish) well, though he will need to add some more velocity to it make it a more viable option at higher levels. He has a change-up that 15-20 mph off his fastball and he throws it with feel. At times that pitch really bottoms out, so it could be a fosh type offering, or palmball perhaps. Mitchell is a solid student and a legitimate D1 and draft prospect.
