Jacob Raffaele is a 2009 LHP/1B with a 6'2'', 200 lb. frame from Carlsbad, CA who attends La Costa Canyon HS. He has a strong and physical body on a large frame. Raffaele has a low effort and short arm action that works from a high 3/4 slot. His mechanics are good with good rhythm. He is big and strong but not yet a hard thrower. His fastball (79-80 mph) had some run and occasional sink when he got to extension. As his outing went along, Raffaele got better. Though he did not show a curveball he did throw a changeup with some feel (71 mph). As he settled in Raffaele started to throw a lot of strikes and got a lot of ground balls. Offensively he showed some promise as well. His approach is quiet and the ball got off his bat well. He has a flat swing and good plate coverage, allowing him to bang the ball hard to the opposite field. Raffaele is a solid student and should be followed as a college prospect.
