Austin Sheffield is a 2007 right hand hitting corner infielder from Gulliver Prep HS, residing in Homestead, FL. Sheffield has a pysical, athletic build on a strong 6'4" 215 lb. frame. He clearly passes the eye test and will continue to get stronger. At the plate Sheffield showed some interesting raw tools that will keep him on follow lists for some time. He hit from an open stance and got squared up on time as the pitch entered the zone. His plate coverage was good and Sheffield showed the ability to hit the ball hard the other way. It was clear that he works to get his hands inside the ball and he did a nice job of staying consistent with his swing plane. Sheffield's barrel lags in a positive sense behind his hands, creating life and whip through contact. He has good bat spepd and is going to hit some home runs in the future and will do so to all fields. He was moving around a lot in the box and may need to find a more relaxed pre-pitch approach. On defense Sheffield showed that he has good hands and is going to be an adequate defender at either corner in the infield. His raw arm strength plays best at 1st base, but with a quick release it can also play at 3rd. He ran 4.89 home/1st with a 7.85 60 yard time. Sheffield, like a lot of young, raw talents, just needs some time to continue to develop the hitting tool. He has a chance to do some damage with the bat, with college being his best opportunity to develop that tool. He is strong and aggressive, with bat speed and a sound hitting approach. In the hands of a quality hitting coach, Sheffield could take off in a hurry.
