2004 South Undergrad Showcase
Mathew McDonough is a 5'6" catcher in the 2006 class from Kingwood, Texas, who makes up what he lacks in size right now with some very good baseball skills both offensively and defensively. McDonough can really hit and the wood doesn’t seem to make much difference to him. He has a solid fundamental swing with good bat speed, and swings aggressively through the ball with good extension out front. McDonough had 4 hits in his 2 showcase games, and showed an advanced ability to hit the ball hard to all fields depending on pitch location. McDonough’s defensive skills are also solid. He has good foot quickness and short, compact actions. His arm strength is college level right now and he’ll throw out runners. He has a young face and might grow some more, but college coaches need to overlook the 5'6" and concentrate on the tools and skills.
