2007 Atlantic Coast Underclass Showcase
Kyle Hackney is a 2009 RHP with a 6'0'', 155 lb. frame from Pittsboro, NC who attends Northwood HS. He has a young, slender frame that projects well for future size/strength gains. Hackney was at the previous week's Atlantic Coast Top Prospect showcase but was a different player this week, playing with much more confidence and skill. Interestingly, he was listed as a primary shortstop the previous week but a primary RHP this week. On the mound, Hackney showed a nice balanced delivery with good direction to the plate. He used is lower half well and his arm action was smooth. Hackney's velocity was better from the stretch than the windup and he was consistently 81-83 mph with plenty more there. He consistently cut his fastball to left handed hitters and it was a good pitch for him that can be developed. His slider and split finger change were both promising pitches that he could throw more often if he wanted to. Hackney moved the ball around well and showed an idea on the mound. Hackney swung the bat well, he made solid line drive contact to all fields and stayed back well on the ball and used quick hands in his swing. His fielding actions at shortstop were clean as well. He could develop as either a RHP or an infielder and looked good at both this week. Hackney is also a good student. He was named to the Showcase Top Prospect Team.
