2024 Rocky Mountain Workout Showcase (Fri.)
Diego Varela is a 2025 RHP/OF with a 6-0 155 lb. frame from Denver, CO who attends George Washington. A medium athletic frame with some twitch. Lean build with some projection throughout. Ran a 6.94 60-yard dash. Worked out as an outfielder with some twitch to his actions with good aggression and speed working to the baseball. Took direct routes with quickness and a feel for the angle of approach. He scoops it up and throws 87 mph from the outfield with a shorter and quick arm action through an extended-release. He keeps the throws on a low flight, with good carry out of the hand to the target. The throws have a good ball flight and come out well, showing his good fundamentals from the outfield. Good accuracy on the throws as well. Also worked out as an infielder, throwing 80 mph across the diamond with a feel for the footwork and soft hands working out in front. He funnels to the waist and works through the motions well. He has a feel for the backhand and some pace/tempo to his actions overall that allow him to get the ball out quickly. He had a clue for the angles and had good accuracy across the diamond. Varela is a right-handed hitter with a spread base, higher-set hands, the back elbow up, and a squared setup. He gets the foot down and swings hard with good aggression, working through the zone. There's quickness in the bat and speed through the zone to be able to get some jump off it when he syncs up. He handles the barrel well at times, with a slightly uphill path through it that leads to some hard-hit line drives. Some lift was shown pull-side during his round of BP swings, but mostly hard-hit line drives working gap-to-gap. Took a good round of BP swings and produced an 80 mph exit velocity during PG Tech testing.
