Cutler is a physically young man who with some physical maturation could become a very good college pitcher. He already has some excellent skills and just needs the velocity behind them to take it to the next level. Cutler has easy athletic actions on the mound, in the field and at the plate and probably the easiest and smoothest is his arm stroke on the mound. He throws his fastball at 80-81 mph now and does a good job of turning it over and keeping it low in the strike zone. Cutler’s curveball is in the low 70’s and he shows an instinctive ability to change speeds and the depth of the break on it according to different situations. Cutler’s change up is a quality pitch, too, and he uses it effectively to set up his fastball. Cutler had very little trouble getting quick outs in Chapel Hill and we’d be very surprised with his polish and array of pitches that he didn’t dominate most hitters at this level of competition. With some more velocity, he should be able to do the same at the next level, too. Joe is a good student.
