2004 World Showcase
Nicolla was one of the top power hitters at the World Showcase. He’s really tightened up his body since we first saw him during the summer and now carries a very solid 210 lbs on his broad shouldered 6-2 frame. Nicolla has a calm, tall stance at the plate and takes a full aggressive swing. He showed us the ability to both turn on the ball and to hit it a long, long way to the opposite field. Some of his moon shots to center and right center during batting practice almost brought rain. Nicolla’s at bat against hard throwing Josh Copeland was an eye opener, as Nicolla was able take an aggressive hack on Copeland’s 2-strike 93 mph on the outer half and drive it 325 ft on a line to right field. Plenty of big leaguers would take a slow walk back to the dugout after that kind of pitch. Nicolla’s arm strength and speed right now are playable for left field at any level but there’s certainly a good chance he’ll end up at first base at some point. Nicolla is a very good student who will be scary with a metal bat at the college level if the pros don’t get him first.
