2006 National Showcase
Kevin Ahrens is a 2007 switch-hitting shortstop/third baseman from Memorial-Spring Branch HS, residing in Houston, TX, with a 6'1" 187 lb. frame that is strong, athletically proportioned and still has more room to fill out. Ahrens is a talented player and ranked #23 among the 2006 PG National Top 100 position players. A switch-hitter, Ahrens had the opportunity to swing the bat more from the left side at PG National. He sets up to the ball very well, with a slightly open stance and hands held high. Those hands work very easily to the ball as he has good hand-eye coordination. Ahrens has power potential that will develop as he gets stronger. He showed a good line drive swing and stayed inside the ball well, with a nice opposite field stroke. He handled velocity from the left side. From the right side he also showed some power potential as the ball got off his bat well with consistent barrel contact. Ahrens looked very close to putting it all together at PG National and his later at-bats resulted in much harder contact and better swings than the early at-bats. On defense he showed a good left side arm and good hands. The ball carried well across the diamond. He is better suited to play 3B long term, as his 4.50 home/1st from the left side and 7.35 60 might suggest. Though a below average runner, Ahrens is a good base runner and showed it by getting good reads on balls in the dirt and taking an extra base. A top level D1 prospect, Ahrens will also draw strong draft interest, particularly as if his power starts to develop more rapidly.
