2006 National Showcase
Michael Gipson is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Palm Beach Central HS, residing in Green Acres, FL. He has an average athletic body type with a strong build on his 6'1" 190 lb. frame. At one of the deepest showcases ever for pitching, he ranked #71 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. Gipson pitches from an over the top slot and has good arm speed. He has a short arm action on the back side and pitches with pretty minimal effort. His delivery is on line to the plate, contributing to his good command of all pitches. There is nothing really spectacular about Gipson on the mound, but a lot about him that is good. The sum of what he does is better than if you just evaluate each aspect of him as a pitcher on its own. His stuff is quality and his pitchability is good. With a fastball that topped at 89 and was in the 86-88 range, he has enough raw stuff to compete in the zone with the fastball, which he does. His curveball was primarily in the 75-76 mph range. With 11/5 shape and good biting action, that pitch is a solid complement to his fastball and can be used as an out pitch. Gipson can start bats with his fastball and curveball and keep hitters off balance with his command of both. There is not a lot of physical projection left for Gipson, but it can be expected that he will continue to steadily gain a bit more mph on his stuff and if that curveball approaches 80 mph, it is a pitch that is quality at any level. Look for him to go to college and then have his chance to play pro ball after that.
