2004 Midwest Top Prospect Showcase
Richard Kowalski is a slender 6'0" senior from Illinois who lists himself as a primary pitcher, but who looks good as a hitter as well. On the mound, Kowalski has a slinging arm action with a horizontal arm slot and pause that looks a bit uncomfortable. His fastball was 77-81 mph, and he threw a 64-65 mph curveball, and 73-75 mph changeup as well. As a hitter, Kowalski showed some present tools and has a chance to improve with more strength on his 165 lb. frame. He is a good runner at 7.29 in the 60. Kowalski has a smooth, easy balanced swing with quick hands and he hit a game home run to left field and a hard triple up the right centerfield alley. You have to watch performance at some point and Kowalski was one of the best game performers at the showcase. What position best fits Kowalski is an open question. His speed fits well in the outfield, especially if he gets stronger and his bat continues to develop. Kowalski is an outstanding student who should qualify to play at just about any school in the country.
