2004 National Open Top Prospect Showcase
Steven Giummo is a 2005 catcher from Sarasota, Florida. Giummo is a player we have seen before at Perfect Game events. He wasn’t able to participate in the workout portion of the showcase due to a scheduling conflict, but did participate in games and batting practice. Giummo is an extra big catcher at 6'4", 220 lbs. with very broad shoulders and the chance to get very, very strong in the future. He has a real strong arm from behind the plate that’s probably his best raw tool, and moves well for his size. Defensively, the area he needs to work most on is softening his hands a bit. At the plate, Giummo will show his raw power on pitches up and over the plate, but he appears to be in a transitional phase where he’s thinking more about hitting mechanics than hitting the ball hard. Tools wise, Giummo is a Todd Pratt type of athlete with the power arm/power bat combo. It’s OK if he strikes out a few times as long as he aggressively drives balls for extra base hits. Steven is a good student.
