2003 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Once he realized that he could handle the pitching in Chapel Hill, Champion showed us a real nice bat. He drove the ball up the gap for an extra base hit the second game and had three solid hits the last day. Champion has lots of upper body and hand strength and it works well for him at the plate. On defense, Champion has some quickness and close to big league arm strength. His pop times were as low as 1.87 but he’d do well to sacrifice a bit of time for a smoother, more compact release. He has good catchers instincts and could develop into a special player.
