Austin McNicholas is a 2016 SS/C with a 5-9 180 lb. frame from Austin, TX who attends Akins. Medium frame, athletic build with present strength. Right handed hitter with a spread, slightly open stance. Hands stay quiet at load and launch on a compact plane with a line drive path. Balanced lower half with some shift into contact. Shows good barrel control with the ability to consistently square up contact. Extends through contact well with the ability to hit to all fields. Has present bat speed to all fields with the strength to drive the opposite field gap. Game and batting practice approach were consistent, working the middle of the field resulting in line drive contact. Worked out defensively from both the infield and behind the plate. From the infield shows smooth glove actions while surrounding and funneling the baseball. Quick exchanges with a compact three-quarters arm slot that produces accurate throws across the infield topping at 86 mph. Athletic footwork to each side with smooth, easy actions while working through slow rollers. Has a low set with good hip flexion behind the plate. Low, compact arm cirlce with a quick glove to hand exchange while throwing to second base. Creates solid momentum while gaining ground producing firm, downhill throws to the bag. Best pop time of 1.97 at 77 mph. Has athletic actions behind the plate as well as in the infield. Graded better at this event as an infield prospect. Good follow. Outstanding student.
