2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Valencia is a 5-10 junior left handed pitcher/outfielder from the Miami area. He has a very mature and well developed upper body and looks like he works hard on the weights. Valencia ran the 60 in 7.35 and threw an impressive 85 mph from the outfield during drills. Valencia has very smooth pitching mechanics, good rhythm and an advanced idea of how to pitch. His fastball was 76-79 mph with some occasional running movement. He threw a big breaking slow curveball at 56-58 mph that made his fastball look sneaky fast. We’d consider Valencia a better outfield prospect at this point. His hitting mechanics are similar to his pitching mechanics in that they are very smooth and polished. Valencia gets a deep load and has nice rhythm through the ball with very good bat speed because of his strength. He showed a pull/loft approach in batting practice but went to the opposite field well in games. The ball jumps off his bat well with power. Valencia is going to hit at the next level and his other tools play well. He is a good student.
