2017 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
Tate Johnson is a 2019 OF/RHP with a 6-1 185 lb. frame from Cedar Falls, IA who attends Cedar Falls. Large frame with long limbs and an athletic build. Frame projects to support additional size with strength. Ran a 7.55 sixty-yard dash. Primary outfielder with smooth, deliberate footwork while working to and through the baseball. Clean glove actions while funneling and working through exchange. Released from a compact three-quarters arm slot generating uphill carry to the bag, topped at 73 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, slightly open stance and simple front side trigger. Creates slight top half coil at load prior to lower half launching to contact with rotational actions. Loose, extended path to contact with an uphill plane through extension. Primarily worked to the middle of the field but flashed the bat speed to turn the barrel and work to the pull side gap as well. Also pitched showing a smooth, balanced delivery. Clean arm circle at separation and released from a three-quarters slot. Fastball showed some cutting action to glove side in the mid 70's, topped at 77 miles per hour. Changed speed with a curveball offering that had proper shape with depth when located down in the strike zone. Effectively mixed pitched and changed speeds while pounding the bottom of the zone. Excellent student. Tools will continue to develop with maturity and repetition.
