2006 California Underclass
Derrick Baines is a 2007 C/3B from Tahoma HS, residing in Maple Valley, WA, with a 5'10" 185 lb. frame. Baines has a good catcher's build. He is stocky and strong. As a hitter he worked inside the ball well and employed a patient hitting approach, letting the ball get deep. He is a good opposite field hitter whose in-game rhythm was good. Not a pure power guy, he will hit some doubles in college. Behind the plate Baines is a good receiver. He flashed quality catch-throw skills and received well. His ability to catch a good CB was evident. He was able to do that because he has strong/soft hands. Baines is a leader type of catcher, the general on the field. As a thrower he was accurate in the games and posted consistent times. He can be even better if he can quicken up his feet a bit. Baines is a quality backstop in many ways and is a good small to medium size D1 prospect to follow this summer.
