Gerardo Vargas is a 2020 RHP/1B, OF with a 6-5 190 lb. frame from Castro Valley, CA who attends Moreau Catholic. Tall frame with long limbs and a lean build. Frame projects to support additional size and strength. Ran a 7.24 sixty-yard dash. Primary right handed pitcher with a simple rock step to medium leg lift delivery. Stays balanced at gather and works to the plate with tall and fall lower half actions. Lands in line with front aside and carries momentum through finish well. Hid baseball well with a compact arm circle at take back and released from a compact three-quarters arm slot. Fastball jumped out of hand well creating running life to arm side in the low 80's, topped at 82 miles per hour. Curveball had 12/6 shape with tight spin and late depth. Tends to slow arm speed with a changeup offering that had some fade in the low 70's. Aggressively attacked the strike zone with fastball and looked to change speeds late in counts. Also worked out from the outfield showing deliberate footwork while closing to and working through the baseball. Funnels off to side and released from a three-quarters slot. Created uphill carry out of hand topping at 80 miles per hour. Right handed hitter with a slightly crouched, slightly open stance. Loose, extended hand path with a level barrel plane. Created some leverage when connecting with baseball out front. Good student. Named to the 2017 California Underclass Showcase, Top Prospect List.
