Robert Mercado is a 2020 RHP/1B, 3B with a 6-0 180 lb. frame from Ontario, CA who attends Ontario. Medium frame with beginnings of strength. Primary right handed pitcher with a compact step back to high leg lift delivery. Created slight hip coil at gather prior to drive to the plate. Full arm circle at take back and released from a three-quarters slot. Flashed some arm whip with a fastball offering that generated downward plane with run to arm side through the zone in the mid 70's to low 80's, topped at 81 miles per hour. Curveball had 11/5 shape with solid spin and good depth. Generated sharp, late break when maintaining arm speed through extension. Showed the ability to drop arm slot with fastball at times and create additional run to arm side. Consistently worked ahead in counts and induced weak contact. Also worked out defensively from the infield showing smooth paced footwork while surrounding the baseball. Funnels the baseball out front and worked through exchange with developing fluidity. Released from a three-quarters arm slot producing accurate, on line carry to the bag at 78 miles per hour. Right handed hitter with a spread, slightly open stance and high back elbow set. Works to contact with rotational lower half actions. Inside hand path to baseball with a line drive barrel plane through extension. Displayed beginnings of bat speed while employing a mid field to pull side approach. Excellent student as well.
