2007 West Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Justin Koehler is a 2008 3B/P with a 6'0'', 188 lb. frame from Atwater, CA who attends Buhach Colony HS. He was selected as the #1 Top Prospect at this event and showed himself to be one of the better '08 players in California. Time will tell whether Koehler is a pitcher or a position player beyond high school. He is talented both ways, with some strong tools. He has a strong, lean, athletic build. Koehler plays with with passion and intensity no matter where he is on the field. On the mound he has an aggressive approach and can make hitters uncomfortable. He pitches with a high 3/4 slot and has a fast arm that works with some effort. His fastball was a hot 88-91 mph and he throws it aggressively. Koehler also has two really good secondary pitches. His throws a hard 79 mph curveball that is a legtimate out pitch and also has feel of a 78 mph changeup. Koehler attacks hitters and it was fun to watch. Offensively he has good present day power and plus bat speed. His swing is at times a bit big and a little out of control but he is going to hit at the college level in the middle of the line-up. Defensively he showed a really strong arm across the diamond. His footwork needs to improve as do his angles but he is athletic enough to make adjustments and to be coached. If it does not work out at 3rd base Koehler would make a good right fielder with his arm strength, speed, and approach to the ball. He has impact D1 ability and will also get draft consideration in the spring of '08.
