Chris Pierson is a 2006 C/RHP from La Quinta HS, residing in Bermuda Dunes, CA, with a 6'1", 205 lb. frame. He has a strong, durable body, capable of standing up to the challenges of the catching position. Pierson showed strength in his swing with good bat speed. He hits from a square stance and clears his hips well, allowing him to get to the inner half well. He generally has an aggressive approach to hitting. Though he takes an aggressive hack, he has good balance in his swing while still getting through contact well. That allows Pierson to generate some raw power at times. Benind the plate Pierson showed some arm strength and his feet work pretty well. He has consistent pop times. Pierson also worked hard to block balls in the dirt and played with good effort. He has strong hands and should develop into a capable receiver. On the mound Pierson was very intriguing, maybe even more than he is aware. He pitches from over the top slot with a clean circular backside arm action and some arm speed. He maintained good body control in his patient delivery. Pierson has a heavy fastball (82-84) with sink, capable of getting plenty of ground ball outs. He also showed the ability to spin the curveball (68-70) well, resulting in late action of his 11/5 shaped breaker. At times the curveball came out as a plus pitch for him. Pierson competed down in zone well and showed some aggressiveness. He needs more innings because he has a chance to be solid primary pitcher, maybe a sinker/slider closer type.
