2020 South Prospect Showcase
Nicholas Rivas is a 2021 C/MIF with a 5-6 150 lb. frame from San Angelo, TX who attends San Angelo Central HS. To say Nicholas is the consummate worker, would be an understatement. Very few will out-hustle or out-energy this obviously driven prospect. In addition to his high effort level on the diamond, Nicholas is also a recognized student. He ran a solid 7.56 60 yard dash and for a player who is primarily a catcher, that time is well above average. Nicholas shows sound fundamental actions behind the plate. He presents a low profile at the ready. His movements to receive are commendable and his hands are soft and sure. His quick feet and trigger allow him to gain ground and get his 69 mph throws on their way. His 2.03 pop time is plus average. What sets Nicholas apart from a lot of catchers is the consistent accuracy he has on all of his throws. Nicholas shows a mature approach with the gear on and his calm style allows his pitching staff to work with confidence. The best way to describe Nicholas at the plate is that he has an idea and an approach that work for him. His compact build and sure swing path allow for his contact first approach to work quite well. He makes consistent impact on the ball and get his barrel to a sound contact point with routine effort. Although he won't be confused with a power hitter, his ability to strike the baseball with force and hit line drives is outstanding.
