John Berry Upton is a 2027 SS/RHP/2B with a 6-0 175 lb. frame from Auburn, AL who attends Auburn. Medium, athletic looking frame with some lean muscle throughout and plenty of room to physically mature. Recorded a 6.95 second sixty-yard dash time. Primary shortstop with anticipatory actions into and throughout the fielding process. Displayed a quick first step and plenty of lateral range to either side. Funnled cleanly out in-front and showed the ability to make the play on the run. Recorded arm strength up to 79 mph across the diamond during drills. Secondary right-handed pitcher that worked from an abbreviated windup with a belt high leg lift into balance and shorter stride out to foot strike. Fastball worked in the upper-70s for most of his outing, ticking up into the low-80s at times and topped out at 81 mph in this look. Repeats well and showed feel for his three-piece mix with his changeup showing best as a secondary option. He replicated his arm speed effectively on it, while killing spin and creating some fading action to it. Flashed still developing 11-5 shaped breaking ball with varied shape and movement. Took part in the outfield portion of the defensive workout as well, where he used his athleticism to field cleanly off his front foot and maintained momentum into release. Produced arm strength up to 80 mph during drills. Switch-hitter that showed plenty of components from both sides during his rounds. From the right-side, he exhibited a shorter more direct swing path with some feel for the barrel and the ability to carry the pullside gap. From the left-side, he displayed heaviness to the barrel and a more lofted stroke with power projection from both sides, will continue to improve with proper swing adjustments and additional strength. Versatile prospect with upside on both sides of the baseball. Excellent Student.
