2020 California Workout Camp (Saturday)
James Brown Jr is a 2021 LHP/1B with a 6-1 235 lb. frame from Lodi, CA who attends St. Mary's HS. James is a mature HS player who shows a sound ability at more than one position. He ran a 7.48 60 yard dash. A primary LHP, James is a strike thrower with a smooth and repeatable operation. He uses a higher leg lift and solid trunk rotation to pitch down the slope regularly. He repeats his operation well and pounds the zone with three/four pitches. He throws off his well commanded 72-76 mph fastball that shows solid arm side run and some sink. He works his heater to both edges with confidence. His 65 mph change up is sound and shows some late tumble at the dish. His 61 mph curveball and 62 mph slider look very similar in shape and form. He probably needs to figure out which one works better for him and stick with it. Not much difference in the two. He has the right idea. He can be an innings eater at the next level, especially since he is LH. James also took a turn at 1B. Although he probably will only pitch at the next level, he did show adequate form around the bag. He has a feel for the position and his glove works. His 70 mph arm is obviously a bonus as his throws show solid carry and accuracy. At the plate, James uses more of an inside-out bat path . When his timing was on, he struck the ball well. He showed some feel for the barrel. James' future lies on the mound. With continued attention to detail, and a dedication to the weight room, he' can play at the small college level.
