David Olson is a 2008 RHP/1B with a 6'3'', 219 lb. frame from Auburn, WA who attends Auburn HS. He has a big, strong body with broad shoulders. Olson listed himself as a primary pitcher but he's also an outstanding first base prospect and there are plenty of scouts who like him better as a position prospect. On the mound, Olson has a clean, loose arm with a directional delivery that is a bit stiff on the front side. He threw up to 91 mph in Cincinnati and his fastball was pretty straight. Olson's breaking ball was better at higher velocities when it had a shorter slider type break; it tended to roll more the softer he threw it. Offensively, Olson has some serious juice in his bat, with a short, quick load and stride and a leveraged swing with very good bat speed. The ball comes off his bat very hard and he really showed the ability to square up on the ball. Olson further showed his athletic ability on defense at first base, where he showed quick reactions and excellent range. It would be hard to say which direction Olson will develop better in; we'd be tempted to say position prospect right now. Olson is an outstanding student with a verbal commitment to Washington State.
