2014 Perfect Game All-American Classic - San Diego
For the fourth straight year, the West team reigned champion of the Perfect Game All-American Classic held at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif., defeating the East by a final score of 7-0 in front of a crowd of 6,438 to widen the all-time series record lead to 7-4-1.
San Clemente, Calif. native Kolby Allard was named MVP of the contest after an impressive inning on the mound, setting the tone for great pitching performances throughout the game.
All 18 pitchers that took the bump topped out above 90 mph, with Justin Hooper, who started the game for the West, recording the highest fastball velocity at 97 mph. Beau Burrows, Joe DeMers, and Austin Smith all topped at 96 mph. Ashe Russell, Kolby Allard, Mike Nikorak, Ryan Cole McKay, and Luken Baker all topped at 95 mph.
The game remained scoreless before the West would break it open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs in the process. Ryan Johnson, who led off the inning with a walk, scored the first run on an error, with Kody Clemens and Josh Naylor scoring the second and third runs on wild pitches. An errant throw to first base after a hot shot back to the pitcher, Hogan Harris, off the bat of Trenton Clark allowed two more runs to score, giving the West a 5-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, San Diego native Kyle Dean connected for an opposite field single to right field to score Ke'Bryan Hayes, who led off the inning with a line drive single up the middle. After Dean stole second, a groundball to second base and a wild throwing error plated Dean for the game’s final run, giving the West a 7-0 advantage.
Another San Diego native, Drew Finley, picked up the win with a clean inning of work in the top of the sixth.
Dazmon Cameron won the distinguished Jackie Robinson Player of the Year Award announced during the event's annual dinner banquet. Brandt Stallings won the Louisville Slugger Home Run Challenge prior to the game.
