14-year-old Isaias Torres and 14U PG Player of the Year Aiden Kearney both recently attended the 2024 PG 14U Select Festival. Though, at No. 25 and No. 10 respectively, they are within the top prospects for their age group, they’re in the very early stages of their high school baseball careers.

The good news for both of them is that even though they’re both new to Hagerty High School, in Orlando, Florida, they’ve known of each other since middle school.

“We got way closer,” Torres said about his relationship with Kearney since starting practices at Hagerty.

“So far, it’s been pretty good,” Kearney said. “I play with Isaias. It’s gonna be a fun four years. [We] should be pretty good this year, so hopefully we make a deep run to states.”

With big aspirations and an already remarkable travel ball career, the two boys still have the same worries that any freshmen playing on the varsity baseball team would have - especially with 14 seniors on the squad.

“Usually, you’d expect them (the seniors) to be mean,” Kearney said.

“I said the same thing!” Torres exclaimed.

“They’re really welcoming with us freshmen,” Kearney added.

Though school has just started, Torres and Kearney have already been in a rigorous training routine - which, according to Kearney, is part of what made Hagerty a good choice for him.

“They have a great reputation. I know a lot of kids that go there and they say that they love the coaches and he runs great practices. They talk about development - practices are a big part - practicing everyday.”

Torres said he’s already learning long-term lessons in his short time with the team.

“Just work as a team. Everybody does stuff together. Nobody is an individual there. Everybody just works together.”

With Torres just finishing up his first Select Fest, he said it was his hard work day-in and day-out that got him the invite. He also added a few specific things he's been working on this past season.

"I ran a 7.5, I think, [the] last showcase I did. And then, national showcase, I ran a 7.1, so speed and then obviously power. And I started taking pitching more seriously, so developing pitches."

While many players are motivated by their families, Torres's father has a bit of an edge on the normal baseball dad.

"My dad played D1 baseball. So, he knows what he's talking about. He helps me through the way."

As he prepared to go back to Hagerty High School to continue his work there, he reflected on his first Select Fest.

"[There's] so many great guys - only 48 in the country and me being one of those guys is awesome," Torres smiled. "It's a privilege."
